Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to assess a new student to see where they are then work with them and parents and/or teacher to make attainable goals and plans to help them succeed.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Bachelors degree in elementary education from USC Upstate.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $15 for a half hour session and $25 for an hour session. There is also a one-time $25 registration fee. I do not charge for a canceled session as long as I receive at least a 2-hour notice.
How did you get started teaching?
I actually got started in elementary school like many young students who like to "play school." From the time I got home from school I became the teacher to my stuffed animals. :) It has always been my desire to be a teacher. When I became a parent, I homeschooled my oldest son through his senior year and my youngest through 8th grade. When my youngest entered highschool at our local high school, I decided to pursue my dream to become a certified teacher.
What types of students have you worked with?
Elementary - middle school. I have worked with students who LOVE school and students who HATE school. I work with students who are highly motivated and hardly motivated. I have students who are able to sit and listen for an hour and students who need constant movement and a way to channel their energy. I try to meet my students where they are rather than where they should be.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Seeing a student with little confidence find joy in reading all on his own!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Rome wasn't built in a day. Don't expect an overnight miracle but know that consistency is the key!
