Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I meet with the student and parents online to get to know them and ask them what their needs are and how I can help. I ask the student about their interests, and share my interests. I also meet with the parents and caregivers to hear their concerns and how I can meet their needs also. Then we jump right in and start working together on the lessons and academic needs.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Masters of Arts in Teaching degree with a Special Education additional degree. I have taught in the classroom and I have also worked with families with children with special needs.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $55 for a 30 minute online tutoring session with students and $55 for a 30 minute coaching session with families. I have found much can be accomplished in a 30 minute session online because we are focused and having fun learning together.
How did you get started teaching?
I first began informally teaching in weekly after-school clubs during college, and I continued teaching while I lived overseas for 3 1/2 years. I enjoyed interacting with students and learning new things with them and seeing them learn.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from all ethnic and social-economic backgrounds. I have also worked with students from all academic settings, and I enjoy meeting students where they are and helping them become more confident academically and socially as a result of working together. I enjoy working with all types of students and families.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
One student I work with struggles in Math, so as we were working on 2-digit subtraction together, we used a number line chart he wrote down on the bottom of his homework sheet to help him count backwards. We also talked about borrowing from "next door" to give us more so we could subtract. I constantly encouraged him to try again if he subtracted incorrectly, and gave him positive affirmations for working hard together to figure out his Math problems. It was so much fun working with him, and seeing him gain confidence in his ability to figure out his Math problems.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would encourage the student to have a positive attitude and remember the teacher is trying to help them. I would also encourage the student to have a "can do" attitude, and remind them with the teacher's help they "can do" so much more together. I would encourage the student to have fun with the teacher.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
- How can I do this on my own?
- Have I tried to do this on my own?
- What do I already know that will help me?
- How do I want my teacher to help me solve this?
- Where can I look for a solution to this problem?
