AC College Prep (SAT/ACT Prep, College Essays, AP Courses)
About
I believe my service stands out in a few ways. First of all, I am a student at an Ivy League university; I am used to hard work on difficult topics and have developed several study patterns and habits that allow me to succeed in my classes that I have passed on to students in the past. Additionally, I myself was tutored in high school and was inspired by my tutor's drive and dedication to educating and mentoring me. I believe my tutotring strategies take the best parts of teaching I have received and improves upon the limitations of them as well. Finally, as someone who achieved great scores on my SAT/ACT and AP tests through hard work and discipline, I am not shy to share these strategies with students to help them achieve even greater goals than I could imagine.
I love seeing my students succeed; whether this is immediate (in the form of a good SAT/ACT score or entrance into a dream school) or long-term (graduating high school with high honors or succeeding in college), I take pride in knowing that I played a small part in facilitating their successes. Additionally, I enjoy the social aspect of tutoring and mentoring and am glad to learn new strategies and things from my students.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I believe it is important for all tutoring and mentoring to be individualized and personalized; it is difficult to apply the same "cookie-cutter" method to all students because everybody has a different style of learning. I typically have students start with a few practice tests (about 15-20 minutes worth) and have them describe out loud how they are answering each question--for example, what clues they look for, or what words stand out to them, etc. After taking notes and noticing patterns in the student's problem-solving, I am able to craft a personalized approach to difficult and challenging subjects in the same way that the student would solve other problems. This is a great way for students to transfer study patterns and habits to various subjects, and also learn about new things in a way that is somewhat familiar.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have privately tutored a few high schoolers in my home state of Indiana and others in Rhode Island while attending Brown University. My students have gone on to achieve scholarships and entrance into their dream schools. Additionally, I worked for 18 months as a BRYTE (Brown Refugee Youth Tutoring and Enrichment) tutor to refugee students from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I have worked with a wide range of student abilities and pride myself in finding learning strategies that are effective for each and all of my students.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with high schoolers from public schools in Indiana and Rhode Island. All of my students have a drive for success and lofty yet achievable aspirations. One of my students recently received entrance into Cornell University, and another is among the top of their class in high school. I have also worked with students from various socio-economic backgrounds, and am always ready to adjust rates and tutoring location if necessary.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The one piece of advice I would give future students is to always have perseverance and to never give up. Standardized tests and college entrances are difficult and trying times, so it is important to keep an open mind and accept any failures as a lesson and not be discouraged. It is easy to allow self-doubt and uncertainty to creep into this process, but it is important to always remember that success can shine through even the toughest adversity!
