Literacy And Literature Tutoring
About
I have 40 plus years of experience working with students from Kindergarten through grade 12. I have also taught undergraduate and graduate students!
I like working with people who want to learn how to read or write better. I enjoy K-12 especially and have taught in for public schools in Pennsylvania, New York, and Florida. I have K-12 permanent teaching certificates in PA and NY as well.
It is wonderful to watch children actually learn enough to want to know more! Helping others become lifelong readers and writers is a personal passion for me.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I meet and talk with the parents first. Then I work with the student and see what strengths, weaknesses, and preferences exist. Based on student need and parent preference, we work out a preliminary tutoring plan of working at least once a week.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BA in English with minors in education and journalism.
I have an MA in English.
I have a M Ed in Education.
i have taught Reading, Language Arts, and Literature since 1979. I have two current state teaching licenses.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard rate is $20 Per hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I began as a summer camp counselor teaching students study skills. I have always loved working with children so this just continued as I decided to pursue teaching college credits and student teaching.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have working with primary and middle school students for most of my career. These children came from impoverished to privileged backgrounds. Many of these students had learning disabilities, but not all. Often I work with children below grade level.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I am most proud of recently learning and teaching a new Language arts course. The curriculum was terrible but I managed to make it interesting and fun for my students. I believe they finished the year well prepared as well.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a tutor who gets along with you. If you can respect them as a person you will learn a lot more. Make sure you are honest with the tutor so they know how to help you. Looking at him or her as an ally not an enemy will help you get more out of tutoring.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1- why do you need a tutor?
2- what will you do during tutoring?
3- can you really commit to being tutored once a week?
