Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We provide custom individualized (one-on-one) tutoring. We work with students at our Learning Center, Library, at the family home, or online. New families complete documentation to outline specific goals for tutoring including academic course grade goals, study skills, SAT or ACT targets, AP testing, or essay writing.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
All of our tutors are experienced in tutoring one-on-one and teaching. All have subject specific expertise and provide evidence of their accomplishments prior to tutoring in any given area (including degrees, transcripts, and testing results). SAT and ACT tutors have achieved scores in the 90th percentile or higher on the sections they tutor.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Pricing is specific to tutoring service needed.
How did you get started teaching?
Our tutors have years of teaching experience ranging from 1 year to over 50 years!
What types of students have you worked with?
We have worked with students from pre-Kindergarten through college seniors. Our tutoring is custom and individualized to help a variety of needs including special education, study and organizational skills, all academic courses including honors and AP, test preparation (ACT and SAT), computer science/programming courses, foreign language, and select college courses.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Identify specific goals for tutoring and find a tutor/teacher that has the experience and expertise needed. The teacher/tutor is part of a team that includes parents, school teachers, and the student. The student should feel comfortable working with the teacher/tutor and the tutor should be able to communicate clearly in multiple methods to ensure effective learning. The teacher/tutor should be able to show evidence of meeting the specific goals.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should think through exactly what their needs are and be able to define them when talking with a teacher (to the best of their ability). The tutor/teacher can only be effective if they understand the goals for the tutoring. The student should also consider their learning style and how they learn best (is it talking aloud, reading through material, writing notes, etc.). If the student is not sure, the first step would be to talk with a tutor/teacher to identify specific goals and needs then proceed to find the most appropriate fit.
