History And Writing: From 101 To Expert
About
Although it is true that I've always loved history, writing, biology and language, it is my passion for helping others to know what I know and my love of knowledge that makes me stand out.
Beyond my expertise and past experiences, every day I spend 1-2 hours each day reading world news trying to connect what I know of the region to the story and comparing it to other sources. History is being made with each moment, and how that is communicated matters.
No one cares about what happened if you can't explain it, and so I've also spent a great deal of time both writing and researching how to write. The secret of all history majors is we're great writers by default - how else can you get through a 10 page term paper?
If you or your child needs help with history or writing, I'd love to explore how to help. Passion aside, I have the academic chops to match with a B.A. in History from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
I love that moment when someone learns something new and it clicks! To me, sharing knowledge with others is one of the greatest joys.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Each new student presents a new perspective but they also have a specific goal in mind. Here's a broad outline to help you see my process:
1. Identifying what your goals are and how long you have to accomplish them
2. Name and complete a goal for each session - a long journey takes many small steps.
3. After 1 - 3 sessions, assess our communication and see what could be improved. Not everything works with everyone and the only way to ensure you're getting the best experience is to tailor what I know to you.
4. Take it from there!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of California at Santa Cruz.
TEFL Certified.
I was a biology tutor at the college level for UC Santa Cruz while studying there because biology was my first choice for a degree - as a vegetarian, I couldn't bring myself to experiment on animals.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
At this time, my pricing system is:
$20 for the first session.
$30 for all sessions thereafter.
I reserve the right to add surcharges for inappropriate behavior - this is not a fee I like to enforce, and such behavior will make me reconsider our arrangement.
How did you get started teaching?
I've worked with children for more than 15 years and began tutoring them as a babysitter, many years ago.
What types of students have you worked with?
Elementary, Middle, High-School and College.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently got to go home and visit family and friends - it was a wonderful break.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
How someone speaks to you matters - find someone who respects you, listens to you and knows the subject matter.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
(1) Why do you need a tutor - is it a class, a test, a semester?
(2) What specific assignments would you like to work on and why?
