Do you want to speak and write English well? I've been helping adult non-native speakers of English improve their speaking and writing for more than 20 years. I was a classroom ESL teacher and an academic writing instructor in Europe and the UK for 15 years, and now I teach English one-to-one in the Philadelphia area and online.
I have a CELTA certification, a Master's in Applied Linguistics, and also studied US History at the PhD level. Now I principally edit academic writing but also tutor college students and professionals in TOEFL and IELTS preparation and General English. I recently worked with a nurse to pass the TOEFL exam, and am currently working with a housewife to improve her English.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I talk with them about their English learning, where they studied and for how long and what they are currently doing to improve their English proficiency. I then ask them why they want to improve their English, and what job or profession they need their English for. This helps me tailor the lessons to their specific needs. I can then approximate their level of proficiency and set up their personalized curriculum.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I trained as a CELTA teacher to teach English as a Foreign Language in Europe and the UK in 2003. I then worked at private language schools there until 2012. After that I worked with university students in Portugal and the UK teaching General English and Academic English. In 2008, I earned a master's degree in Applied Linguistics and taught academic writing at several universities in the UK.
In 2016, I returned to my hometown Philadelphia and set up as freelance academic editor and part-time English language and academic writing tutor. I've taken several courses in Editing from the Editorial Freelancers Association and the University of Chicago, and currently work with a couple universities editing grad students' writing.
