Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with a new student I allot the beginning time for introduction and icebreakers, as he or she should feel comfortable with and see that they can trust me as their tutor. As a Christian I also begin the meetings with prayer for it to be a time of enrichment for the student. I adapt to the student and with the student. I also learn about their background regarding special needs or disabilities and any accommodations that should be made to make the learning environment best suited to them as an individual.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Education: Associate's Degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis on English
Training: DC Reads K-8 Tutor in College, Big Buddy Grade 2 Tutoring Program in High School, Daycare Teacher Aide in College, & Pursuing to become a Certified Tutor
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Standard Pricing System: $30/hour with session times varying, depending on what works for the student
How did you get started teaching?
I've always loved teaching/tutoring children and watching them grow in academic and emotional intelligence, especially when I can teach them the Bible and promote spiritual growth!
What types of students have you worked with?
Grade School Students (mainly from Grades 1-6)
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
When I am tutoring a student and his or her face lights up when a concept is grasped that they weren't able to grasp before, it shows me why I love doing what I do. Students benefit from having one-on-one time with an academic professional, and often don't get those experiences due to their one teacher not being able to reach every student, so being able to fill in that gap and help in fostering the child's proper growth is rewarding.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Be sure that they are skilled in their line of work, have enough qualifications and experience to back up their job title, are trustworthy and easy to get along with, and that they are there to benefit the student most of all.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Questions that I think students should think through before talking to teachers about their needs are: What accommodations would make my academic learning easier while also promoting enough growth for me to achieve my grade-level goals? and What are you, as my teacher, able to do to accommodate my needs?
