English Tutoring With A Twist!
About
I'm a 23 year old, full time college student who has extensive background in English as well as writing in the sciences and healthcare. My fondness and aptitude for words and writing led me to become a peer tutor in highschool and to continue my tutoring career in college, where I revamped my univeristy's tutoring program, bringing new techniques and talents to our staff. I have a deep understanding of the various learning styles students have, I am known for thinking outside of the box and helping students make meaningful, solid connections with literature in various ways, including through relating stories to personal experiences, having students explain how the plot might look in today's day and age, and creating an excitement about literature. I am a published author and I received stand-out grades in my English courses throughout my educational career.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Our first session lasts about half an hour and comes at no charge. I will speak with the student, review their syllabus for the class, and ask them to bring some past assignments to look at. Then I administer a learning styles quiz, which helps me tailor my teaching techniques to that student. Finally, I have them identify three strengths and weaknesses as they relate to English and ask them to identify their goals for the course. Then we set up our first official session (which lasts about an hour) and we will plan out how to achieve their goals and begin working on course content.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I currently train new members of my university's peer tutoring staff each semester, proving information about how to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each student and incorporate them into the learning process that occurs during tutoring sessions. In addition, I have taken AP Lanugage and Composition, various composition courses in college, Introduction to Poetry, Heroism/Conscience/Faith (an upper level English corse at my school), and have written a variety of lab reports and research papers for science and healthcare coueses.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
- your first session is an evaluation and is free
- half hour sessions are $20 and include proofreading, brainstorming for papers, and study technique teaching
- full hour sessions are $35 and are recommended for content concerns and longer papers (anything longer than 10 pages)
- if you're interested in multiple sessions a week, costs can be negotiated on a case-by-case bases
How did you get started teaching?
I realized that community service was something I was passionate about in high school while working with the National Honor Society chapter we had. When I thought about how much effort we put into service outside of our school, I pitched the idea of a peer tutoring program that would utilize resources to provide support to our school community. The rest is history!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with high school and college students, as well as student with learning disabilities (including ADHD, ADD, and dyslexia).
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure they're somebody you're comfortable with! You need to be honest with them about what you're struggling with and what you feel you have a handle on. If you're not comfortable, then there won't be an honest conversation going back and forth and you'll find that you don't improve as much as you'd like to.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Are you having a content problem or a technique problem? By this I mean - is it this specific story or poem or assignment that's problematic or do you not understand how to approach the course content in general. If you're having the same issues time and again with different assignments and different texts, it's likely a technique problem.
