Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I do an initial intake to establish where the student is, what the goals are with the parents and or student. Our second appointment is a 1:1 in current tutoring subjects to see where there student is academically and conceptually and see where we need to fill in the gaps or what direction I can take the student in to achieve said goals. We will set up weekly, bi-weekly or bi monthly schedules as needed. I work on an as needed basis. If your student has achieved said goal, then I wish them the best going forward/
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have my own education and 10 + years in tutoring K-12 subjects specializing in Math, English, Mandarin, Sciences and history. My favorite subjects are probably maths and history and applying the concepts to today and relativity to today's life.
1:1 per 25 minute session $18
1:1 per 55 minute session $30
1:2 per 55 minute session $45
1:3 - 1:5 per 80 minute session $60
How did you get started teaching?
I moved and there weren't many jobs in the area. I started at a local tutoring company and became head tutor and office manager. I then transferred to a school setting and then decided to branch off on my own on my own hours.
What types of students have you worked with?
I love that I have worked with many different types of students. I have worked with 504 plan, IEP, Modified (Oregon School Terms). I have worked with students who have multiple degrees of dyslexic and dyscalculia (though I am not certified to teach those programs, those are specialized and I can refer others.) I have worked with ADD, ADHD and non diagnosed students as well. I get to work with 4.0 students and students who want to get ahead or those who want to understand the concepts better.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Personalities play a large part in any relationship. Be willing to give a tutor 3 chances before moving on. They are taking time to try and find what works best for you, please give them the time to do their job. Also, please let them know if you don't understand something. Communicate with them when you don't understand a way they are teaching a concept.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Have I read the material myself? Have I attempted the homework? and I have gone over my notes and sample problems? In other words, have I done my part to be able to try and learn and have I put in the practice myself? Concepts are taught quickly and students are expected to practice on their own at home or outside of class. Sometimes the students just don't understand the concepts the way the teacher teaches it. Its the additional practice on their own that solidfies everything.
