The Engineer Tutor - SAT Math & Programming - 99th Percentile Scorer
About
Hello! 👋 My name is John and I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Computer Science on a full scholarship. As a full time engineer, I have worked for Fortune 500 companies and major research institutions including as Southwest Airlines, UT Southwestern Medical Center, and Rice University.
I scored a 790/800 on the SAT Math. For years, I have helped students all across the US improve their scores from 140-340 points on the New SAT. I love teaching the SAT Math as I've had great success in helping my students improve the fastest.
I also tutor computer programming in Python and JavaScript, and I work with student's interests to design projects that are fun, easy, and educational. I have received awards for my programming skills, including 1st Place in the Southwest Hackathon. Today, I work with a wide range of students, from 8 year olds to professionals.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I invite them to one of my free, unpaid Saturday full exam sessions and they take a full diagnostic test. We then sit together and determine the best plan of action.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am currently seeking my BS in Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Dallas on a full-ride merit-based scholarship. My SAT was a 1510 (99.3% percentile) and a 23/24 on my essay. I was a National Merit Commended Scholar and an AP Scholar with Distinction. My academic strengths include writing, math, and reading. On the side, I am a nationally award-winning flute soloist and have received over $150,000 in scholarships for my academic merit and community impact.
I have taught privately and through big companies such as Varsity Tutors and Wyzant, where I hold a perfect 5-star rating in both platforms and a Top 10 Best Tutors recognition on Tutors.com.

How did you get started teaching?
Four years ago, I realized my talent for teaching when I opened my own private music studio in Beaverton, Oregon. Since then, I've had dozens of raving parents and highly successful students because of my energetic and passionate approach to teaching. My ability to explain difficult concepts and establish lasting connections with students was soon applied to academic subjects. I then landed a private contract with Varsity Tutors and was a top-rated tutor for years with a 5.0-star rating.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have tutored the entire spectrum of students: ambitious students who improve scores up to 410 points, busy students who juggle work and sports, and students with disabilities, such as dyslexia and ADHD.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
It is one thing to hire a basic SAT tutor, but an entirely different thing to find an SAT tutor who cares!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Does the tutor truly care about your success?
How much experience does the tutor have?
Can you build a personal relationship with this tutor?
