Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, I’ll start with an ice breaker. It’s always good to know the student first. Then I’ll have them take a learning assessment so I can see how they learn best. After that, the student will take a diagnostic of what they know so I know which areas to focus on and we’ll work hard to get them succeed.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
City Year. The non-profits whole mission is to decrease the drop out rates. We do this by tutoring and mentoring students in Tulsa Public Schools. We tutor in Math, science, history and ELA(English Language Arts).
How did you get started teaching?
I’m 21 now and I’ve worked at a summer camp for two years and I realized I had a passion with working with kids. Now that I’ve been in City Year, I’ve got to experience what classroom life is like and I’m hooked. Teaching students is amazing.
What types of students have you worked with?
I’ve worked with ages 5-14. Every single one of them come from different backgrounds but I have mostly worked with students who come from a low-income family/area. These are the students who need someone who cares about them in a school setting.
