Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My typical process for working with a new student includes: getting to know my student in order to create a trusting and productive environment to learn, discussing academic goals with the family, figuring out learning methods that the student is most receptive to, and creating a game plan that will not only allow the student to reach his/her goals but exceed them.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
When I am not in class, I am volunteering and working throughout the year with a non-profit organization that focuses on equipping young girls with the resources and support they need to succeed in their future careers. During the fall and winter months, I help lead small groups of girls ranging in age from six to sixteen years old through workshops about self love, exercise, career searching, and team building. I also work during their summer camp and help organize and lead the camp's events and small groups.
Essentially, I love getting to spend time with students and help them on their journey of learning and growing, inside and outside of school!

How did you get started teaching?
I decided to start tutoring because I loved helping my younger brother and other children in my neighborhood throughout school year with their classwork. I decided that continuing to tutor into college would be a great way for me to stay connected to students and learning, while also building my resume.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of all ages, from elementary school to high school. I also have studied with students with IEP's, dislexia, ADHD, etc. and understand that they are just as capable as any other student to learn! I want to make sure that each student recieves personalized attention that caters to their learning strengths. Each student deserves to feel safe and encouraged to ask questions, learn from their mistakes, and unlock their true academic potential!
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A recent event that I remember fondly was the last Proyecto Mariposas camp. I was able to connect with so many lovely girls from Columbus and have important conversations surrounding their relationship with themselves, with others, and their passions. I look forward to having an even more active role for this upcoming camp, as I will be helping create content, run the day program alongside other camp counselors, and leading small groups.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Although I am still a student myself, when looking to hire a teachor/tutor/study partner/etc. it is important to find someone who can recognize and cater to your learning strengths. It is also very helpful to learn from someone who has been in your shoes and taken the same class or course material in the past. I find that the student and tutor have better success when the tutor knows what the student is learning and what is expected from them.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should remember to ask themselves these questions before talking to teachers or tutors about their needs:
- What subjects/concepts are challenging for me? Why?
- How do I learn best? Am I a visual learner?
- What are my goals for tutoring? What am I working towards?
- Do I feel heard? Do I feel encouraged to make mistakes, learn from them, and succeed?
