Hi! My name is Ms. Barnett! I have been helping my students, my foster kids, and my own children for years to become better in English Language Arts! I knew at the age of ten that I wanted to be an English teacher! It has always been my love to be able to show others how to become better at English skills! I have many strategies to help you be the best you can be in English. I have been doing my dream job as an English teacher for over 30 years in Ohio, and l still love it!
I have a Bachelor's degree in English Education and a Masters in Educational Administration. I have been nominated for teacher of the year at every school I have taught. The best award by far, however, was the one I was awarded as favorite teacher by my students! In addition, I have received awards from my Board of Education for helping students academically, and for housing children that were misplaced from their homes for lengths of time. I like to have fun, smile, and get the job done!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My typical process for working with a new student is to get to know them and find out what their asperations are as far as the sessions are concerned. I would try to find out what they are trying to get out of the lessons. I would work with them in finding out the best learning style for them, in order to incorporate a strategy that is tailor made for each individual.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a teacher of English Language Arts for over 30 years. I have been tutoring students of all ages for over 20 years. I was also a home instructor for some 10 years for students who were injured or for other reasons were unable to enter the school building for class.

How did you get started teaching?
I got started teaching by watching my mom gather the neighborhood children on our porch during the summer for daily lessons and snacks. I'm not sure which the kids showed up for, but they came daily! While I was in elementary school, I realized I was good at English and was beginning to fall in love. By the time Junior High came around, my 7th grade ELA teacher tipped the scale for me with her passion for English and set me ablaze! I tell my students it was never a question of what I wanted to be when I grew up. I loved English, and I loved kids. Putting the two together...man...it's like birthday cake when it's not even your birthday!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with elementary students. I have worked with middle school students. I have worked with high school students. I have worked with gifted learners. I have worked with learners with IEP's.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Recently, while teaching at the Virtual Academy, I had a student who was struggling with citing textual evidence. Her mom would email me and the student would as well to express the frustration she was having. She began to come to my online office hours. Just to see her smile and laugh as we worked through the issues day by day...until she got it...Priceless.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would thell the student to look for someone who has a passion for English Language Arts and has lots of experience. The experience means they have seen different pitfalls, and should be able to come up with a phlethora of strategies to get through issues. I would also advise them to find someone who doesn't look like he/she has been sucking on lemons all his/her life! A soft smile can cause you to feel a bit more comfortable.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should think through questions like " What exactly is it that I am trying to get out of the learning sessions?" What is my timetable for achieving my goals with the learning sessions?" "What are my expectations for the teacher?" "What are my expectations for myself?" "How will I be able to assess growth in the area that I am seeking expert help?
