Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I will set up a meeting with them to see what they are currently working on. Working through problems together (Or virtually) can give me a gauge as to the student's knowledge and can help me determine what skills to work on with them. Working on these skills will help the student gain a deeper understanding of the material and feel more success with current & future material.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.A. in Teaching Mathematics from John Carroll University (2013)
I was awarded Mathematics Major of the Month (2013)
I was asked to represent the Math Department for incoming students to JCU (2013)
7-12 Integrated Mathematics Secondary Education Teaching License
I am a current health coach who is becoming NBHWC certified: Motivational Interviewing Skills, Goal Setting - can be applicable to teaching and setting goals for students.

How did you get started teaching?
I had a teacher when I was in high school, Mrs. Basista, who made me LOVE that I loved math. She made me love knowledge in general. I never had that love of loving difficult math until that point... I was always good at it, but she made it fun... she made me WANT to learn more. Ever since, I have always wanted to be that teacher for someone else.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with a wide range of students; students with diverse backgrounds, students who struggle with material, students who struggle in/out of school, at-level students, high achieving students, athletes, thespians, students with other passions, students with math as a passion.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently became a manager at the company I currently work for. I am thrilled to be doing something I love and helping other coaches learn, grow, and thrive in their careers.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone who WANTS to teach you... they have a lot of knowledge to give you and will be patient and willing as you grow. Be open to learning and be patient. It might be gradual, but you will get there.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Think back to the first time you struggled with math or a subject you are struggling in. Ask them if they can help with that foundation of knowledge. Building a better foundation can help you grow & flourish in those areas.
