As an actuary for an insurance company, I have real world experience in the practical application of probability and statistics as well as calculus. Although no longer there, I also have 5 years of teaching experience in Probability and Statistics at Cuyahoga Community College. In my experience, most mathematics educators shy away from teaching the practical side of mathematics due to the fact that they primarily work in the academic realm. My strength is providing knowledge of how real world problems can be solved using the tools learned in the classroom.
At my job, I enjoy the challange in taking real world problems and converting them into a quantitative mathematical problem that can be solved. He knows his stuff and is really good at explaining complex (and simple) mathematics in ways that make the students understand. He tutored me through a graduate level quantitative methods class and I ended up earning a 98.5% in the class. I highly recommend him!
Generally, I take a practical approach. I ask what they are currently working on, what questions they have, and their actual overall interest in the subject. The level of interest in the subject dictates how deep I get in their overall understanding of the material. I can get passionate about the subject but I find that too much information can be burdensome.
