About
I have taught math for over five decades. 30 years as a full time HS math teacher, then over ten years as a substitute in urban, rural, and both public and private school environments. I've taught SAT math prep, including being a cowriter the Math SAT curriculum for a highly regarded program. I've worked for private tutoring corporations and managed programs for other math tutors. I've taught ALL math levels, K through Calculus. My specialty is in writing individual programs for students after assessing their weaknesses. I have a Masters Degree in Math Education.

When a student has a breakthrough, it's wonderful to be part of that. There's a point in mastering new topics in Math when the student puts it all together, and it makes sense! When a student achieves that, it doesn't just increase ones interest in furthering their knowledge of Math. It's a total confidence builder for all aspects of their lives.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
A first session involves my own method, which is Enhanced Tutoring. In a one-hour session (more time if needed) I will explain the subject at hand, and determine what skills need to be enhanced or remediated so that any weaknesses in Math background can be addressed. An analysis with an individual remediation packet (both materials I write and available materials when they're ideal) will be provided, either in a second session or mailed to you. The session with materials costs $20.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I taught public school math, grades 8 through 12 for thirty years, all subjects and ability levels. I've substituted, tutored, SAT prepped and worked for private sector tutoring corporations. My MEd is in Mathematics Education, so I'm trained and experienced in writing and evaluating math materials and learning styles. My background is unique because I've experienced urban, suburban, rural, public and private sector teaching and tutoring.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$20 for a one-hour session. There's no charge for going over time if it's needed to complete what we're accomplishing.
How did you get started teaching?
By the time I was in 6th grade, I was already the Math teacher helper in classrooms. I attended college with the goal of being a HS Math teacher, and have never wavered from my passion to make Math interesting and a proud accomplishment for my students.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked at all ability, age, economic and aspirational levels.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
NASA had a display at the Science Museum in late September. There was a lot of information about current NASA endeavors, interactive opportunities, and student interns to talk to about their preparation to work on the space program. Valuable educational opportunities that aren't part of the school curriculum surround us in the Cleveland area. It's a real asset to ones knowledge to seek them out.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make a list of problems to solve together or some background topics you've had questions about. Bring along some homework and a test or quiz on which you've written out the problems on your own; it helps the tutor determine which skills need improvement. You'll know if the tutor is a good fit if their explanation is clear and you feel confident in your ability to work together. You should strive for a tutor who can teach the topic with confidence and clarity, and can answer any questions you have directly and clearly.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Always ask "How do I start the problem"? You don't want a person who does the work for you. You want a tutor or teacher who starts you on the path to success!
