About

Hello,

My name is Kathryn Middlemas, I am a 32 year old living in Cincinnati, OH. I am new to tutoring, though have been a trainer on many different jobs I've held over the years. I work with youth each summer at a retreat in North Carolina, so I am very familiy with working with young people. I am currently in college finishing my bachelor's degree in Integrative studies. With the current pandemic and many parents worried about what to do with this up coming year and many resorting to online or virtual learning, I have decided to try and provide assistance in tutoring elementary age youths in math and english. While I am not a certified teacher, I do have a passion for helping others and for teaching/training. I like to encourage students to use things they are passionate about to help them understand basic math and english principles. School can be intimidating and frustrating, but it should be fun and give every child a chance to grow.

I am here to try and provide a fresh wah of looking at the same old thing. I am also here to provide a learning experience that best matches the way your child learns. While online learning means I cannot physically be there, it does not mean hands on opportunities for learning are not available. I do not believe in providing the answer, I believe in guiding students to find it themselves, by giving them the appropriate tools.

I enjoy working with young people, inspiring them and making learning fun again.

Kate was able to explain in a new way how to Solve math problems. She did not change the method in which the answer was reached, as this was required by my teacher, but the way she explained helped me to understand it better. Kate is positive and upbeat! I highly recommend her for help with math.

    Frequently asked questions

I believe it's important to get to know the student. I want to know their likes, interests, hobbies. I want to know about what drives and motivates them. I also want to know what frustrates them about school and how they best learn. By getting to know my students on a more personal level, this allows me to then tailor our time together learning to the things they love.

An example of this for math would be, if Susie likes dolls and playing dress up. Then when I am trying to teach her math, I can use dolls and dress up to create a math problem she's interested in. If I am dealing with money mathematics, then we can focus on calculating the money needed for those things she most enjoys.

An emaple of this for english is very similar to the above. If Johnny loves monster trucks, then I am going to try and help him learn sentence structure, by having him learn to write sentences about monster trucks. I can teach him the difference between their, there and they're all using something he enjoys.

I graduated Highschool with my diploma in 2005. I went to college for music education initially and then changed to integrative studies and completed an associates degree. As of now I am back in school completing a bachelors degree before moving on to a masters program. I have been through inclusion and diversity training and worked with youths each summer since 2009. I am use to facilitating large groups and working one on one. While I am not a certified teacher, I have a lot of experience working with you. I also have memories of what was successful for me in school and what was not. I know that flexibility in a tutor and being able to explain the same thing in a different way is important. What works for one student may not work for the next, it is important to be adaptable.

Tutoring sessions scheduled with at least 72 hours notice on M-F will have a standard rate of $35 an hour.

If the session is scheduled within less than 72 hours it is $50 an hour.

Tutoring sessions scheduled for Saturday or Sunday can be done with special arrangements. Cost for Saturday and Sunday appointments are $75 an hour if the instructor is contacted to schedule the appointment with at least 72 hours notice. Cost for weekends is higher as these are outside regular hours of availability and are only done on special circumstances.

Emergency Saturday or Sunday tutoring with less than 72 hours notice, if there is availability to do so, sessions will be charged at $100 an hour.

Adequate notice for scheduling must be given in order to best accomodate all students and fit within my availability as a tutor.

Availability is not guaranteed, I will do my best to accomodate as many students as possible, however the later notice that is given for tutoring the less likely I will be available.

Cost of each session is due at beginning of the session. If for a session cannot be completed due to something on my end as a tutor, there are two resolution options.

    1. the additional time may be rescheduled for the next availability of both student and tutor without any additional cost.

    2. The cost will be prorated for the amount of the lesson that was completed. The remainder of the cost of the time that could not be completed will be refunded to the parent.

If the lesson cannot be completed due to something on the side of the parent/student the cost of the lesson cannot be refunded. This is because I have specifically allotted this time to that student. I cannot place another student in that time and I any plans I may have made otherwise for that time will have already passed.

Please note that I am doing this independently on my own during my free time. There is high liklihood that I may turn down social engagements or other work in order to tutor your child. Yes, this is my choice to do so, however it is only respectful to my choice to be there for you and your student that I not be penalized if a lesson is not completed due to no fault of my own.

I try to be as fair as possible, which is why should something happen on my own end, power outage, family emergency, some unforeseen reason on my end, if a lesson is in progress and has to be ended, I will make it right for my students and their families, either with made up time with no additional charge or a refund of the time not completed. This is also the reason I do not take payment in advance, because should an emergency arise that prevents me from begining a session, then no money has exchanged hands.

Please feel free to contact me with any further questions.

I've always had a love of working with youth. They are always able to teach me something new if I spend enoguh time with them. I have been blessed to facilitate groups of 30-35 youngsters for a week each summer at a youth retreat near and dear to my heart. While this does not include tutoring in school subjects, I do facilitate conversations, deep thinking, and group work. When I was younger I planned on being a teacher, and through the unexpected twist and turns of life, that was not to be my full time job. However, during this time of pandemic I have found that I can try to give back to others by providing this service. While I do not offer sessions for free, my prices are competitive and I try to remain mostly lower than others to try and give families a break on the cost.

What makes school hard or frustrating? (alternatively) What would make school less hard or frustrating?

What would make school fun? (more recess time is not what I'm looking for here.)

How do you learn best? (verbally, auditorially, kinetically (hands on))

Who has been my favorite teacher and why were they my favorite?

Which class do I do best in and why?

What tends to distract me the most while trying to learn? How can I avoid these distractions?

What areas do I need the most help in?
