Whelan's Reading/English Tutoring

Every educator must work to foster academic and character excellence in each of his or her students. As an educator, my goal is to raise students that are intelligent, kind, and well-rounded citizens. I take careful action to foster excellence in each of my students.

I foster academic excellence in my students by providing rich and varied learning experiences for each student. My students are engaged and accountable because of the lessons I create. Young students are given the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge through hands-on experiences and small group instruction. I believe that these authentic experiences are essential to motivate students. I utilize formative assessments to guide my instruction and I review student performance before undertaking any project, therefore each student is accountable. I make sure to tailor assessments and make them as unique and differentiated as my students.

I foster excellence of character by providing choice and employing positive discipline. Students develop their own classroom guidelines and uphold them because they have a sense of ownership. I encourage students to communicate and express their feelings so they feel valued and cherished daily. They learn to develop a rapport with classmates, respect for others and themselves- and above all, empathy for all people.
