About
Hi! I am an academic writing tutor and I help students master the academic writing and English skills they need to succeed in high school, college and graduate school.
I love teaching high school English and college writing and helping students deepen their knowledge of literature and become inspiring writers.
Also, I work with students on college essays, personal statements, and essays for scholarships because I believe everyone who wants to go to college should make that dream a reality.
I love tutoring online because I can add writing resources and tools into sessions. I can also help students brainstorm, write, and revise their writing all online.
I started teaching writing, English, and ESL in 2001. I have my M.A. in English and an M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages(TESOL). So, I can meet the different needs of both native English speakers and non-native English speakers.
I cater my lessons to the specific objectives and goals of each student. Also, I work with students in different fields and disciplines so that I can help people with different academic writing styles.
I love tutoring online because I can personalize my sessions with tools and resources that will enhance students' lessons.
I also love how I can help students not just in a session, but throughout the entire week. I offer free online office hours which is a wonderful way for me to answer questions and provide extra help to each of my students. I can support my students' learning more than I could when I tutored in-person.
I also love working with students from all over the world. If you want to see more about what I do check out my website: https://www.academicwritingsuccess.com and follow me on social media:

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
After you contact me, I will set up an online consultation. At the meeting, we'll discuss your writing goals and the help you want to receive. I'll also give strategies for how you can improve your writing. Then you can decide if you want to sign up for online academic writing tutoring.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor of Arts in English from Russell Sage College, a Master of Arts in English from Boston College, and a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from the School for International Training. I've taught and tutored ESL and writing in elementary schools, adult education schools, and at colleges and universities.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I offer students a free consultation, and a then a 30-minute free online tutoring session. After that, online tutoring sessions are $50/ per hour. I know that not everyone wants or needs a full hour of tutoring, so I also teach 45- minute and 30-minute sessions.
How did you get started teaching?
I started out as a writing tutor in college, and I realized I'd loved working with students and helping them become great writers. Then I began teaching academic writing and tutoring ESL when I was a graduate student at Boston College, and both fields fascinated me, and I knew I was meant to teach writing and ESL. My students had great ideas and high academic and professional goals. I wanted to teach them the English and academic writing skills they needed to make their academic and professional dreams happen. My professional life is dedicated to giving students the language, writing and academic skills they need to succeed in college. In 2017, I started online tutoring because I have more time to work with students on their academic writing.
What types of students have you worked with?
When I was teaching I worked with elementary students, adult education students and college students. As an online I tutor, I work with college-bound students and college and graduate students. I also work with adult ESL students. I tutor native English speakers and ESL students.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently helped a client write a personal statement for graduate school. I loved learning about her experiences and helping her develop her ideas and put them into words. She wrote an inspirational personal statement that reflected her unique perspective and how she would contribute to the graduate program. We did this over 4 sessions. If you want to see how to write a personal statement see the video on my YouTube Channel, "How to Write a Personal Statement: 6 Steps to Success"
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
My advice in hiring an online tutor is to first check out his or her website and see if the work they do is current (do they have videos and recent blog posts et?) Look for details about their experience, tutoring services, any about me sections, and if they have social media links check those too. You'll see what they post, any videos they have, and how they respond to people on their social media. You can usually tell by then if that person might be a good fit for you. Next, when you find people you would like to contact see if they offer free consultations and/or a free lesson.
The best way to see if someone is a good fit for you is through meeting them and seeing what it's like to work with them. A tutor might have a lot of education and experience, but he or she may not be a good match for you.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I would suggest asking yourself what qualities you want your tutor to have. What qualities did your best teachers or tutors have? What is your goal with tutoring? How much help do you want from your tutor? How often would you like to meet with your tutor and for what length of time? Do you want comments and feedback from your tutor outside of the tutoring session? How do you learn best? Everyone has different learning styles. Ask yourself which tutor will suit your learning style.
