I am a qualified Criminal Prosecutor with 4.5 years hands-on experience in the criminal justice system. I have both an LLB and BA from Rhodes University. I am the recipient of an Investec Rhodes Top 100 Student prize in the category of General Excellence and the Rob and Trish Midgley Prize for Outstanding Contribution to the Law Faculty. I was placed on the Dean's List for academic merit and was also the President of the Rhodes University Law Society in my final year. Following University, I received Justice College training through the National Prosecuting Authority in the area of Advanced Litigation. Further in-house training provided by the NPA includes fraud and corruption matters, ethics and environmental law short courses. My strengths during high school were English, Creative Writing and History, for which I obtained the highest marks and subject prizes in my year. I also received a distinction for Geography and was awarded full academic colours. I love reading fiction and non-fiction, catching up on current world events, and the latest legal updates. I have a ready sense of humour and endless patience.
I volunteered for 6 months in a Monastery in Cambodia, where I taught English, History and Geography to both Khmer and Taiwanese children and adults. The children's classes were quite structured and based on a program that I designed myself, on the instruction of the Master of the Monastery. The adult classes were discussion-based, focussing on eastern history, philosophy, geography and culture. Western history was introduced, disseminated and contrasted with its eastern counterpart. During University I was a tutor to my friends, mainly focussing on Law, English and Modern Fiction. One-on-one and group style tutoring was employed. It's also important to mention that I have personally received many different styles of tutoring throughout my academic life, in areas where I had issues, accordingly, I am aware of certain techniques for specific problems.
I am an exceptionally patient and empathetic person. I understand that each individual student has strengths and weaknesses, and I tailor my lessons according to the needs of the student. Learning should not be a painful or boring experience, so with this in mind, I breathe as much life and colour into the material as possible (like my favourite teachers did for me). I was quite a hyperactive child, that became a hyperactive student and consequently, I remain in this state as an adult. This means that I understand what high or low energy levels can do to the learning experience. My experiences in Asia have taught me "mindfulness," a concept that I wish I taught when I was studying. The pressures a young person faces may often come across as overwhelming - planning for the future, societal, parental and peer pressure, the pressure that high-achievers put on themselves - and can often manifest as a barrier to learning. Accordingly, my students will also receive mindfulness training (indirectly), to assist them in calming their emotions, appreciate what is triggering/frustrating them, and what they can do to help themselves.
