I have guided hundreds of college students on their journey to become better writers, readers, researchers, and self-editors in my roles as a writing course instructor and an Academic Learning and Writing Coach at a state university. Those roles, combined with my experience as a published researcher and a newspaper, magazine, and corporate writer and editor, give me a unique and broad range of skills to help students reach their goals. I enjoy the process of learning, how a one-step-at-a-time approach helps them build their skills. I love seeing the sense of accomplishment students have when they make progress. I've worked with students from day one of college to graduation, and share in their joy as they realize their dreams. It makes it all worthwhile!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I begin with getting to know the student, what they see to be their strengths, what they want to work on, how they currently approach writing. If they have instructor feedback on a completed or in-progress assignment, I like to review it. Then, I work with the student to create a plan to improve skills. For a specific writing assignment, I usually analyze what they've written to better understand their level and range of skills and always provide detailed feedback through in-person, phone, or email conversations, and share outside resources they can use. I encourage students to contact me with questions (big or small) throughout the process.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Studies with a concentration in Writing and Communication and a Master of Liberal Arts degree with a combined concentration in Creative Writing, American Women's Fiction, and Women's and Gender Studies. I have received training in teaching online and working with ESL and ELL students.
