About
Hi! I'm Sophia Lian, an enthusiastic student and tutor who is enrolled in Columbia University in the City of New York. I plan to pursue a major in financial economics, bringing together my interest in the social sciences and mathematics. As a tutor, I am able to provide personalized peer-to-peer explanations and personalized advice from the perspective of a student. All throughout high school, I maintained a rigorous course load with a total of 16 APs and a 1550 SAT score, allowing me to have an experienced grasp of testing strategies and efficient study methods. My main tutoring and personal studying philosophy is to strive to find ways to make all course content relevant to personal interests and to romanticize the studying aesthetic.
I have various tutoring experiences ranging from kindergarten children to high schoolers to college students in foreign countries. In a local children's museum, I led 20-student classes focused on English literacy skills for pre-kindergarten Mandarin speakers from immigrant families in a classroom setting. Since my junior year of high school, I have been tutoring high school students in algebra and SAT prep. I am a volunteer for an online English tutoring platform that supports Ukrainian college students, creating lesson plans for speaking practice and prompting discussions of culture. My most recent tutoring job was as a grader at Kumon, working one-on-one with students of all ages to get ahead of the math and reading curriculum. My experiences have put me in a position ready to both create/follow lesson plans, lead group/individual tutoring sessions, and teach online/in-person. I am excited for opportunities where I can push learners to find the same fulfillment and confidence that my learning journey has empowered. Please contact me if you have any additional questions or to schedule a lesson. Thank you!
