I was valedictorian of my class and scored a 1580 on my SAT. Just finished my first year of college - I have a 4.00 GPA. I have never formally tutored but taught a lot of my friends and colleagues during school and am told I am good at helping others understand material (friends have told me I'm the reason they passed or did well in their classes). Both my parents are teachers as well.
I love the process of understanding new information, and thus I love imparting this knowledge to others as well.

Depends completely on what the student is looking for and in what subject. I'm a math major and specialize in math tutoring. In that subject, I would help them work a series of problems in a single area, and then have them do one or two on their own to see if they have mastered the skill. If it were say English, I could help guide students to the right answers in reading comprehension by outlining how they would get there from the text, or help them find better words and more complex sentences for their essays. Basically, I emphasize teaching the students not through concept as much as through example as that gives students the practical skills needed to succeed.
It would be helpful to know the specific areas that the student wishes to work on beforehand so I could better prepare a lesson plan tailored to that student's needs. Also, knowing how the student learns best, if they have an idea of that, would be helpful.
