My name is Amina, and I tutor English (ELA) and math to elementary and middle school students, up to Algebra 1. I work hard to find a teaching method that works best for each student, with an emphasis on the use of interactive technology and active learning. I believe that all subjects are an opportunity to teach critical thinking, logic, and other life skills, and I implement this philosophy into my lessons. For example, in math, students are taught how to create developmentally appropriate proofs, creating a deeper understanding of a math principle's function and importance. This prevents the student from forgetting the topic, and it helps them learn valuable skills that will help them in other school subjects.

Each class will include a short review of the previous lesson, focusing on the student explaining how to solve a few short problems. Then, we will interactively explore that day's topic. Students will frequently solve problems that built on the previous one- I like to keep lecturing to a minimum. Many of these problems ask students to interact with the world around them, such as measuring items in their house, reading street signs, or correcting text messages for proper grammar and spelling. This keeps the learning applicable to their lives. If a student needs help with specific work for school, we will work on that. Finally, we will review the topic and I will assign a short homework assignment.

I have been teaching lessons and mentoring students at a volunteer after-school program for two years. I have experience teaching one-on-one and in a classroom setting. I always make sure to keep my lessons interactive and hand-on, and I prepare thoroughly for each lesson. I believe that all students can enjoy learning, it just takes a unique approach for each student. I love tutoring because I am able to give students the individualized attention they need to discover that love of learning.
