Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Create a safe space. A student needs to feel safe before anything else. Create a space that allows the student to feel welcome and comfortable with sharing his/her ideas. Their contribution to each session is valuable and they need to understand the impact that they have.
I would start by introducing myself and asking for them to do the same. I love ice breakers so I would set a few fun ice breakers in place so that we are not simply interviewing one another with questions.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Certified K-12 teacher. 5+ years of teaching experience.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$40/hr
How did you get started teaching?
I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher. I love children and I esepcially love seeing youngsters succeed at something they set their mind to.
When I was little I use to "play school" with my little cousins. I would assign each of them classwork and even homework. I had a special binder that I used to collect all of the work and I would later grade their work. My older cousins told me that I would eventually get tired of teaching but I never did.
I went to studied English and Elementary Education in undergrad at the University of Mary Washington and later went on to receive my masters degree in Dance Education at New York University as a 21st century scholarship awardee.
I've taught 1st grade for a year in Virginia before moving to New York and then taught high school dance at KIPP College Prep for three years.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with students of all ages and various abilities.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How can I figure this out on my own?
Is this something that can challenge me as a learner?
