James McManus Tutoring
About
I have a BA in literature and gender studies and currently work as an assitant teacher to special needs children. I have two years teaching experience with special needs children, and have been privately tutoring for a year.
I enjoy watching the progress my students make, especially with their writing. I want them to be able to walk away from our sessions with a clear idea as to what they need to do to succeed on their own.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I first begin to work with a new student, I like to see what they are able to do first. I might give them a writing prompt or a quote to analyze before jumping in and offering some tips. I also like to see what methods are productive for my students, since they know themselves best.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have 2 years experience working with middle school aged special needs children. I also have a BA in literature, where I focused on modernist novels.
How did you get started teaching?
It happened by chance, and I am so grateful. I was sort of thrown into a teaching position by someone who thought I'd be good at it, and here I am all these years later!
What types of students have you worked with?
Nuerotypical children, as well as students with autism and other learning and developmental dissabilities.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a tutor in your area of expertise?
Have a clear idea of what methods of teaching work for you and let you tutor know! Not every tutor is a good match, especially when it comes to writing where there are so many styles to consider.
