About
I have a strong background in reading, writing, grammar, editing, and proofreading. I earned my BA in English and spent more than a decade reviewing children's books, which makes me well-versed in contemporary children's literature and nonfiction for the K-12 range. I currently work for a tutoring service, where I use a self-sufficiency tutoring approach. What this means is that I provide students with just enough information (and confidence!) for them to reach an answer themselves and trust that it is correct. I will not be around when students are at school or taking tests, so I do not want to give them answers or make them reliant on me--I want to make them self-reliant and self-confident.
I love "aha" moments--those times when a student's expression switches from confusion to clarity. Knowing that I've successfully helped a student to grasp a concept is incredibly fulfilling. Likewise, I really enjoy seeing students actively apply a new skill they've learned, and how much it improves their work.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When starting with a new student I like to ask what areas they need help with, and preferably that they show me examples of work that has proved difficult. I also want to know the student's interests and what THEY feel they need to improve. Before diving into any deep work, I want to get to know the student, know their goals, and create a comfortable, mutually respectful atmosphere.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BA in English & World Literature, and spent more than a decade as a children's book reviewer. After reviewing children's books, I worked for a year with City Tutors, helping adult learners prepare for the Reading & Writing portion of the TASC/GED test. I enjoyed tutoring adults so much that I decided to become a certified adult ESL teacher. I will earn my certification at the end of May 2019.
