I run summer math programs for high school students in the Eastern European tradition of problem solving. I would also happily run such programs during the school year if there is interest. After years of teaching at the uniersity level here I have seen how much more poorly prepared the students who have gone to high school in this country are than their peers from other countries. I have realized that thi is due to the fact that certain math topics and skills which are standard to the curricula in other countries are simply never taught here and these are the topics and the skills that I teach in my programs, so that the students educated in this country can become more competitive with their peers from different countries. I am originally from Bulgaria where I attended a highly selective and demanding math high school. While in high school I won many math competitions and Olympiads and the math skills I developed and the knowledge I accumulated led me to many more successes in math - I earned a math Ph. D. from the University of California, Berkeley and have gone on to have a successful international career as a math researcher and professor. I credit 90% of my success to the math skills and knowledge I received and developed in my math high school in Bulgaria. Many of my classmates from my high school have also gone on to have successfull careers in fields involving math - computer science, engineering, finance. I have a passion for seeing students fully develop their potential and achieve great things in life and that's why I want to give them the math tools I and my classmates learned in our high school through my summer programs. Students can see what kind of problems I teach in my programs here http://www.albany.edu/ialexandrova/HS.html
I they find that they find these problems challenging and that they are learning from them, they should consider signing up for my programs by emailing me because in college they will already be competing with students from other countries who have the skills and profeciency to do problems like these. These skills are also absolutely necessary for success in college but are unfortunately never taught in the high schools in this country. I want to help students here succeed!
