I offer multiple-subject tutoring for 4th graders to adults, often integrating the different subjects so the the student does not realize s/he is learning so much as having fun. My style is particularly beneficial to the homeschooler or internet Common Core student. I work with each student's attention span, learning style, and interests to keep sessions lighthearted and productive. I believe in creative and positive reinforcement.
I began teaching others when I was a gradeschooler who "got it" and offered to help my fellow students catch up. My strength was finding different ways of looking at a subject than the typically singular way the teacher offered. Through my entire educational career, I have both worked and volunteered as a tutor in everything from taxes to American Sign Language. As a workshop leader, I have travelled all over the US teaching leadership, critical thinking, mentoring, and even MS Office. As an improv actor, I bring humor and an ability to think on my feet. Kids respond positively to someone with energy that matches theirs.
Each student is so unique, I end up learning right along with them. I love helping my students exceed their goals and giving them incentive to learning more. The best part is celebrating their achievements with them and their parents.
Melanie is a well-gifted educator. She has a loving way of teaching each child individually. She tutored two of my children and after assessing them and finding out how they learn best... she was able truly to help them to the best of their ability. Both of my children attend the best-ranked schools in the Clark school district and both finished with a 3.8 GPA (all A's and 1 B). This landed both of my children on Honor Society, eligible for the Magnet school they were accepted into for High School, accepted onto Student Council and strong educational foundation. I believe so much in Melanie that not only have I referred her out to other parents but will keep her each year until my kids graduate from high school. She will be the key ingredient as to the "why" my kids have an impressive college resume at the end of their high school career. Melanie will be the difference of community college or a University.
Melanie is patient and kind, and tailored the sessions to my learning style.
Melanie really took the time to get to know Sheila and work with her learnign disability. She helped Sheila do better on tests, too. I liked that she kept track with me and set goals.
The first one-hour session, we get to know each other and I tune in to the students' learning style. Hopefully the parent(s) will be involved so that I can find out if what is holding the student back is learning style, lack of interest, mismanaging time, or other factors.
I have a BA in communications with a minor in education. I began tutoring one-on-one in 2004 and have done it off and on ever since. I am a professional trainer/speaker who develops and delivers curriculum for adults.
