Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I get to know the student and develop a rapport while assessing through observation and informal measures student needs to best individualize and structure lessons. This is where I get a feel for any needs the student has and modifications and ways of teaching them to meet their needs.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have two masters degrees in education. I am Orton Gillingham trained. I hold the following certifications: Elementary Teacher K-8, Spanish teacher, French teacher, teacher of students with disabilities, structured literacy teacher, ESL teacher, learning disability teacher consultant, nationally certified educational diagnostician, advanced certified autism specialist, board certified cognitive specialist.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My lessons range from $40 to $70 per hour depending on student needs, distance, and frequency of lessons. I offer discounts for group lessons or siblings.
How did you get started teaching?
I started as a Spanish and French teacher. I also taught Wilson teading and ESL. I have tutored all subjects over the year . After 10 years teaching, I have spent another 10 years on the child study team as a learning disability teacher consultant where I continue to work.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with the general education population but have a lot of experience with the special needs population especially students with reading difficulties, learning disabilities, autism and ADHD. I work best with struggling learners and individualizing instruction to meet their needs. I have worked with all ages prek through college.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Given the social distancing and time spent away from family, I recently attended a family barbecue with my immediate family which under normal circumstances I am accustomed to seeing more frequently.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Ask questions not just about credentials but how the tutor plans to carry out instruction. Also provide information about student needs to see if a good fit for the tutor.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Sometimes it is hard to formulate questions or know what to ask. Reflect on areas of struggle and let the tutor know where you struggle and ask the tutor how you can work together to make meaningful progress. Also try to prepare at least one question prior to the tutoring session.
