About

Hello, my name is Lisa Vicino, and my super power is teaching math to struggling students in grades 5-12 and aspiring teachers. I have been tutoring math online since 2015, but I have many more years of experience with in person tutoring.

I am passionate about helping my students develop their math sense, learn how to study math, and gain confidence in their mathematical abilities. All of these components are essential for students looking to complete assignments with greater ease, improve test scores, and raise their overall grades in math.

I tutor arithmetic, algebra, geometry, basic probability, and basic statistics for Middle School and High School Students, as well as students looking to become certified teachers. I find that students need a strong foundation in basic concepts, such as fractions, decimals, percents, and order of operations before they can understand more advanced math.

Does your child stress about math tests, or get frustrated when doing their math homework? I can help them with their homework, prepare them for tests, and enhance their study skills.

I provide supplemental materials and resources that complement and build on what they are learning in school. When applicable, I use math manipulatives to help them visualize and understand math concepts on a deeper level.

When it is time for your child to take the SAT and ACT, I can help them fine-tune their math skills, test-taking strategies, and how and when to use their calculator.

Are you a future teacher, and you are worried about doing the best on your Praxis Math tests? I can help you learn the math you need to know for the Praxis Core, Elementary School certification, and Middle School Math certification.

I have helped dozens of students to pass their math tests needed for certification, so they could make their dream of becoming a teacher a reality. I have a comprehensive system for getting you ready for your test, a large library of materials and resources, and proven strategies for making test day a success.

It means so much to me to help a struggling student who feels defeated, lacks confidence, and has lost hope that they can improve. I get excited when students realize they can be good at math because I know that confidence is an essential part of them making progress. I realize that this is about much more than my students getting good grades or knowing how to solve math problems, it is about them feeling good about themselves, overcoming obstactles, and being happy.

    Frequently asked questions

For reading and math students in grades K-9, I generally start with an assessment to figure out their areas of strength and weakness.  I discuss my findings with student's parent, and then get started addressing any foundational skills that are preventing the student from doing well.  I am constantly monitoring how the student responds to new materials and lessons, so that I can adapt my learning plan to best meet their needs.  I keep the student's parent updated on all of this.

I have a BS in Accounting from Kean University, but I also took over 27 credits of math courses in college.  I am a lifelong learner, so I am continously studying math and how best to teach reading and math to help my students get results.

While attending Middlesex County College, I tutored math and english at the college's Learning Center.  Years later, I decided to resume tutring when I heard that many of my friends could not help their children with their homework because they had not learned using the same methodology as their children were learning.  As I worked with those first few students, I began to realize that I had a passion for helping struggling students and their families.  It is about so much more than having strong reading or math skills; it is about having confidence, and not hesitating to take on new opportunities and challenges.  I want all of my students to be confident in their abilities, and I do this through giving them strong reading and math skills.
