About
My name is Catherine Elias. I would be delighted to help your child excel in math. I have been tutoring for over ten years, during which I have tutored middle school through high school math courses including 3ʳᵈ-8ᵗʰ grade math, PreAlgebra, Algebra, Geometry, PreCalculus, Calculus, and Statistics.
..
I have a BS and a MS degree in engineering, from Washington University in St. Louis, so I have had extensive training in Math and Science. While in graduate school, I taught several undergraduate courses and tutored students one-on-one.
..
I work well with students and parents alike and I love seeing kids understand the material, improve grades, and have a good time learning. Parents have told me often how well their children are learning their particular subject because of my expertise and personal interaction. I have a great rapport with students and parents alike. Many of my students I have had for years, starting in middle school and moving right through high school.

Online tutoring is an effective one-on-one tutoring experience. I have been using Zoom for years, because it makes the experience quite personal and very effective. It also gives you the most flexibility in managing your time. I have tutored most of my students online for years. I also do in-person tutoring at my location. I live in Martinsville, NJ.
..
In addition to the weekly sessions, I provide help (via texting and photos of problems) when the student is stuck on a homework problem during the week between sessions. During the school year, I keep open time slots later in the evening on most days for extra tutoring sessions when needed in preparation for a test or quiz.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When first working with a student, I obtain a copy of the student's textbook so that we can always be on the same page, literally. I provide software installation and setup instruction. We get to know each other a bit before our first lesson, discussing strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes (usually Math and Science), workload, activities, etc. From that we come up with a tutoring plan. Often we will work at specific problems that the student does not understand how to solve and backfill the missing foundation.
I have direct communication with most students, dependent on parents' preferences. I love when students or parents text me when they do well on a test or quiz, and often events not related to math or science. I believe that there is more to being tutored than just the lesson. I value my relationships with parents and students.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My current rate is $50.00/hour with price variations depending on frequency, duration, and course level.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching computer science at the college level when I was in graduate school. I tutored students at that time as well. I homeschooled my own children while they were in middle school. I started tutoring middle school and high school students in math and science while working full time as an engineer at AT&T. I am now semi-retired — I just love tutoring kids.
What types of students have you worked with?
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I enjoy getting to know my students. Recently, I started working with a sibling. It was so much fun getting a different perspective and to see similarities and differences between siblings. I’m always grateful for a chance to have an impact on a student’s life.
