Katie Vates Tutoring
About
I have extensive experience tutoring middle and high school students across math, science, English, history, essay writing, and study skills, and I'm comfortable working with a wide range of levels.
In addition to subject-specific tutoring, I focus a lot on organization, time management, prioritization, and study habits. I help students break assignments, tests, and projects into manageable pieces and create a clear plan so school feels less overwhelming.
I've also spent the past six years working with students on standardized test prep (SAT/ACT), covering math, science, and English sections, and helping students build both the skills and confidence needed to approach testing in a more structured way.
I work closely with students to help them see school and individual assignments as something approachable rather than intimidating. I enjoy helping students build confidence by doing those extra "reps" outside the classroom so they feel more prepared and capable.
Over time, many of my tutoring relationships have naturally evolved into more one-on-one guidance around school decisions and longer-term goals, similar to college counseling but in a more personalized setting. Because I work closely with students, I help them think through decisions in a way that's tailored to them-whether that's course selection, academic priorities, or the college process. I'm very familiar with the nuances of different schools and programs from both my own experience and working with other students.
I graduated with high honors from the University of Richmond, where I was also a Division I athlete. Balancing academics, athletics, and tutoring helped me develop strong organizational, time-management, and prioritization skills, which are a big part of how I work with students now.
I've seen students not only improve academically, but also grow in confidence and independence in how they approach school. I'm happy to share references and would love to connect to see if I might be a good fit.
