About

Results of receiving tutoring with me are long lasting. I use models/pictures to explain the math. I look for weakness from the past that is causing chaos in the present that will ruin the future math learning. I try to make connections that kids understand. I've been doing this for a long time, and see that kids want to do well in math, but there are so many misconceptions from previous experiences. Many students only know one way...their teacher's way....and sometimes it's based on a dead-end approach. Sure, you’ll get that answer correct this year, but there is no true understanding. I like seeing the lightbulbs go off when I'm working with kids. They feel as though they can learn the math. I like to see what the problem is that is preventing the learning (the root cause) and address that. Once you hit that sweet spot, the confidence builds and you're ready for more success.

Ric is amazing. My son has been seeing Ric for almost three years and honestly I dont know what we would do without him. My son has always struggled with Math but Ric has really helped him to understand what he is learning in class and feel confident in the subject. My son has never complained about going to tutoring because Ric makes it fun and my son feels very comfortable with him. Ric is very accommodating, offering both remote and in person tutoring which is nice with busy schedules. I would highly recommend Ric to anyone looking for a math tutor. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed.

My son has been working with Mr. Arias for the last 2 years and one of the things he appreciates the most is the way that the information is explained to him and that he makes sure he understands why the problem is solved the way it is. If it is a review for a test, we send the packet ahead of time so they are ready to make the most of the session. Mr. Arias is patient, kind and relates to my son in a way that my son is completely comfortable telling him he still doesnt understand a concept or needs to review a problem one more time, or asking many questions during the session. He makes sure my son leaves feeling confident about an upcoming quiz or test and it has helped increase my sons math grades. They also have covered/reviewed some concepts that he had on the ACT & SAT exams which was added bonus.

My 14 year old son says that Ric is fluent with the math concepts, gives (appropriately) detailed explanations, and he is charismatic. From a parents perspective, Ric is experienced enough to tap right in to what my son needs and easily adapts, and knowledgeable enough with the concepts that he can get to know the student as well. I hear my son chuckling every so often during tutoring, and hes talkative after, so I know he feels much better with the material after their work together. Im glad to know that Rics experience spans algebra, geometry and beyond. When something is a good thing, you know it. Working with Ric is a good thing.

Mr. Arias helped my son to pass Geometry after missing 40 days of school due to illness. Thanks to him and other dedicated teachers and tutors my son was able to catch up and move on to the next grade in high school.

    Frequently asked questions

It starts with a phone call or in-person conversation. We get right to it...let's meet and get started. Within one hour, your child will tell you if they want to meet with me again. After that, you know that you and your child have a safe place to learn/review the math. I prefer to work in my home, but will travel to you or a mutually convenient place for a travel fee. Now with zoom, you don’t have to travel to my house and I can be at your service very quickly to help with those math emergencies.

I graduated from U of Miami with a mechanical engineering degree and received an MBA while working at United Technologies in Florida.  I knew that I had skills that weren't being tapped there and did not have the passion for that line of work.  Teaching was always something I was intersted in and I'm glad I made the switch.  My true passion is working with kids one-on-one in math.  Been a school teacher working in math since 2001.

At this point, it's based on travel and topic, but usually in the 50-70 dollar range for teaching.  My travel time is charged at 45 per hour.

As a high school junior, I felt that I could explain things to my peers better than my teachers could. I also had more patience to find what was causing the mix up and could see their way of thinking. At that age, I knew that my friends were trying but just didn’t understand how all the math was connected. I could see how learning this week affected my understanding in future weeks and that it was all related and part of a path. I went to engineering school but always felt the pull of teaching. So I started tutoring in the side and felt like I needed to get in the classroom to have a greater effect. After all these years of being in the classroom (since Dec 2001) I know that my greatest impact is with one kid at a time.
Our greatest success comes when the learner has a true “wantingness” or “ganas” as we see in the movie Stand and Deliver, and is giving genuine effort. You give me that kid, no matter their present level of understanding, and we will have success.
