Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I work with a new student, I am as flexible as I can be with any material that I introduce. First, I pinpoint challenge areas, and then cater my teaching to strengthen my student in these areas.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I graduated with honors from a top university in the United Kingdom, the University of St Andrews double majoring in English and Comparative Literature. For the past three years, I have been tutoring students privately online. Moreover, I have experience as a staff writer and on the editorial staff of different publications, so I have real-world experience in this sector.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I usually charge lessons by the hour, depending on the exact subject matter. Elementary and middle school student lessons are usually priced within a range of $20 to $30 an hour. I love tutoring high school students as well, and usually charge between $40 and $60 an hour for these more advanced lessons. Each situation is unique, though!
How did you get started teaching?
I got started teaching when I joined my peer mentoring group in high school, over six years ago! I loved it then, and I continue to help my peers and younger students through tutoring!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked primarily with middle-schoolers and high school students. However, I have some experience helping even younger children, as well as the occasional college student.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone who makes you comfortable, and who values your intelligence! You need to be able to express where you feel challenged without feeling looked down upon.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What kind of material makes you nervous? Is there any style of teaching that you respond well to? Is there a type of teaching that really didn't work for you? What do you enjoy learning about?
