Alyssa English Tutoring
About
Hi! My name is Alyssa and I have five years of writing tutoring experience. After my freshman year at Rutgers University, I was accepted into a writing tutoring internship program and started working at one of campus writing centers until graduating in 2021. Throughout my time as a Rutgers writing tutor, I tutored over 50 students across different writing courses and fluency levels. Since graduating, I've continued tutoring students requesting help with various writing assignments.
I also have extensive experience with research papers not only because of my work with various students enrolled in research writing courses but also because I pursued a double major in Political Science and History, both of which were research-intensive courses.
Most of my tutoring experiences have been with college students, but I've also worked with students in elementary and middle school.
If you have any questions, please feel free to send me a message. Good luck on your writing assignments!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I ask them to identify specific areas of concern that we can work on together. If they are unable to articulate what they would like to improve on, I often ask if their teachers have made repeated comments regarding certain elements of their writing or I ask if I could see a recent writing sample of theirs to identify any issues or weaknesses.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Upon achieving an A grade in both Expository Writing and Research in the Disciplines, both of which are mandatory writing courses that Rutgers students must take per the requirements of our core curriculum, I was notified that I was eligible to apply for the Writing Theory and Tutoring Internship. I completed the internship with an A grade and began to work at the Plangere Writing Center, one of the three writing centers at Rutgers - New Brunswick, and have since tutored around 50 tutees in total.
What types of students have you worked with?
All of my tutees have been college students, with the majority being underclassmen.
Most of my tutees are college freshmen enrolled in “Expository Writing,” a course that nearly all Rutgers students must complete per their core curriculum requirements. Some of my other tutees were enrolled in “English as Academic Discourse,” a writing course designed specifically for non-native speakers and “Research in the Disciplines,” a higher level writing course that teaches students how to navigate online databases and analyze information from a range of different sources to produce original research papers that typically range between 10-15 pages long.
