Advanced Tutoring
About
Specializing in high school, ap and college level social studies/humanities tutoring. I have a BA in political science from George Washington University, a masters in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary, a masters in Hebrew Bible from Jewish Theological Seminary and have two years of PhD course work at UNC Chapel Hill in Religious studies. I was a TA at UNC Chapel Hill for two years and have taught and or tutored students through both AP exams and my own curriculum.
I have extensive experience working with students at all levels. Each student has a unique set of needs and I work with all of my students to help them critically think through their work. I encourage ownership of subject content and believe the best way to success is through patience and compassion.
When you have been teaching and or tutoring for a long time, you come to recognize moments when the subject, or the content settles in and becomes their own. That was always the most essential moment in my learning and I know the value of helping each person find their own mastery of the material we are working on.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Typically a program is tailored to the specific student and need. After assessing those needs, I work with the student and or the parent to determine what the stumbling blocks have been and what tools will need to be acquired for success. The goal is to always help the student or invidual approach the material critically and eventually take ownership and master their own process.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I tutored throughout my first masters for AP students and have been a TA throughout my career. I have worked with many students on an individual level to assess their specific needs. Usually I meet with either the student or the parent and discuss their goals and desired outcomes. From there we discuss what brings them to tutoring: a need to structure time, specific issues within their courses, a need to learn how to approach their work, editing, and so on. Each program is determined by the specific need of the client.

How did you get started teaching?
I struggled as a student at different times do to my own learning disabilities. As my aspirations grew, I knew I needed creative ways to engage with material. I used many tutors over the years and I realized how helpful some where and how incredibly unhelpful others were. I realized my learning methods ranged from traditional to non-traditional and I had developed a cache of techniques that would be helpful for any student at any level. My communication of ideas excelled and I learned I could help guide students in a very intuitive way.
