A little about Mr. T!

Hi, My name is Mr. Thomas, (my kid's usually call me Mr. T.), and I have been working with kids since 2011. Most of my work has been working with at-risk kids; managing group homes, acting as a Home Support Staff to help family communication, running a psychiatric lodge for hurting youth. In 2022 I earned my Masters in Special Education. Since 2022 I have been working at Yellowstone Academy, teaching middle-school and early high-school students.

I specialize in working with students needing intensive support, whether that is due to behavioral problems, missing academic skills, or other types of educational needs. I have worked with autistic students, students with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, ADHD, anxiety, and other specialized needs.

My approach to teaching is individualized for the specific student, but generally follows a regular pattern:

1. Establish rapport and evaluate student needs and strengths.

2. Work on, or establish general academic skills such as mental stamina, educational confidence, and academic focus.

3. Identify and fill knowledge gaps and teach needed background knowledge/skills.

4. Work on specific academic skills.

5. Assimilating newly acquired skills into existing schema, or creating new schema as needed.

I believe it is important to make learning engaging and relevant to the learner. I try to incorporate life-lessons, hands-on activities, and general life-skills into all of my teaching. I utilize a variety of teaching styles, including videos, lectures, hands-on learning, drilling, the Socratic method and direct instruction.
