About

I have been teaching for a total of six years. My first four years were primarily focused on ESL (English as a Second Language), although I did teach GED classes as well. The last two years, I have transitioned to teaching English/Language Arts in the public school systems in Tennessee and Mississippi. I'm certified to teach in Mississippi, and will have my Master of Arts in Teaching in less than a year.

I enjoy it all. I enjoy watching students grow, researching methods to help the succeed, helping them redefine what they see as 'failure' into a stepping stone for mastery, all of it.

Frequently asked questions

My typical process for working with a student includes learning a little about them. I like to get some basic information from them, such as interests, scheduling, and goals. Knowing this helps me pick texts that interest them, relate English to subjects they already know, and build that relationship that teachers need in order to effectively reach their student.

I'm new to the online tutoring world, and I am not looking to make a lot of money. Mostly, I want something to keep my busy and supplement my income during the summer and in the evenings. It would depend on the grades of the students and the work needing to be done.

I've always loved to teach. This has been a passion of mine since my sophmore semesters in college. I accidentally stumbled into a Methods and Practices of Teaching ESL class, and had my eyes and heart opened up to the wonderful world of education. Since then, I haven't looked back.

I've taught first and second grades, as well as sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. I've helped college students working with their papers since I was in college. High school is uncharted for me, but I have had many former students that have graduated into high school come back and ask for guidance on work.

During my homeroom class this past year, I had a student absolutely blow me away with her thoughtfulness. It was the second month of school, the students were still trying to figure me out, and they didn't know what was okay to talk about and what was off limits. My students and I do not share a racial background, and a lot of them had preconceived ideas about what my opinions were on people who are different than I am. So, one of my girls was reading her library book, and called me over to help her. She asked me who 'Jim Crowe' was. It was like a record scratch happened, and all the kids looked up at us, and it instantly broke down so many barriers between us. We had a great talk about injustice that happened back then, as well as what is happening now, and my student took it upon herself to jump up and start creating a timeline of events from the end of the Civil War to the current day. It was beautiful, and one of my favorite moments teaching so far.

Find a teacher that loves what they do, and who they do it for. Sadly, public school teaching has a bad rap, and it's due to a few bad apples. Most teachers that you meet love their job, love their subject, and would be willing to go above and beyond to help you. If you steer clear of the ones who don't, you'll be fine.

This is hard. For my kids, we always break down our conversations like this:

- Where did I get lost?

- What have I tried in the past to help this?

- What have teachers tried in the past to help this?

-  In what situations have I been successful in this subject before?
