Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My process depends on each student. I will first need to assess what level of knowledge the student is coming in with, and then I will adjust my instruction to meet each student where they are. I will then work to determine how to make the material make the most sense to the student, which will be different for everyone. My goal is not for your students to be able to solve problems because they've practiced them so much... my goal is for your student to be able to solve problems because the problems make sense to them.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelors degree in secondary math education, and I also have a masters degree in curriculum and instruction. While completing my masters degree, I also completed 18 credit hours of math classes. This qualifies me to teach math up to the community college level.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $50 per session. I am open to negotiating discounts for multiple students per session!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all types of students including students who are on grade level, below grade level, and above grade level. I have experience working with students with diagnosed math learning disabilities. I even have experience working with a student who is deaf. While my mathematical sign language is not perfect, I do believe that I could be beneficial for students who are deaf.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
When looking for a tutor, I would encourage you to find one that you are comfortable working with. That may take time, but I belive it will be worth it in the long run. Math, in particular, can be anxiety inducing for many kids and adults! It's important that you feel comfortable enough with your tutor so that you can be honest about your level of understanding! If you don't understand, I need and want to know! My job is to help, and I'm happy to do it!
