About

Over 30 years of teaching and tutoring experience, I have received a number of comments from students about how I have helped them to learn, and with their subsequent education and career.

I have a bachelor's degree in mathematics, with a minor in Spanish. Also, I have a master's in reading. My experience is in public school, private school, and tutoring.

I enjoy tutoring because it gives me the opportunity to get to know an individual, and their specific needs. I love math and the joy of seeing a student learn.

Frequently asked questions

First, I want to get to know the student as a person, and likewise share some information about myself, such as likes and dislikes, siblings, whatever they want to share. Next, I need to know what subjects they have previously studied (in math), and what their current subject is, plus what they see as their strengths and challenges in math. After that, I will want to see their textbook (if any), and current assignments in progress. Then we'll take it from there.

I earned a bachelor's degree in math, with a minor in Spanish. In addition, I attended in-service sessions to update my training in teaching methods in general and in math education in particular to keep up-to-date. I also went on to earn a master's degree in the teaching of reading.

I have worked with students ranging in age from early elementary to college, but most of my experience has been with junior high/middle school and high school students. My students have been people who have always struggled with math, sometimes have difficulties with particular subjects, or who are experiencing challenges at this particular time and only this particular subject.

When I returned to the high school where I used to teach, to attend an FFA event, a custodian I remembered from my years there came up to me to say that his son, who had been in one of my classes, had asked him to be sure to tell me [if he ever saw me] that I had made a real difference in his life, enabling him to graduate high school and go on to success in college. These experiences [as I told the father] are what really make it all worthwhile to a teacher!
