About

I can quickly and effectively teach with more than 15 years experience teaching English, Reading, ESL, and Math to students ranging from early grades to high school and university. I'm licensed to teach reading, English Communications and ESL. Many of my students describe me as their "favorite teacher." They know I care about them as people.

I am tireless when helping and making sure students understand. I love to see when they get it, and the light bulb goes on in their heads. My experience and knowledge helps me quickly assess their strengths and areas of learning to fill in any gaps.

Frequently asked questions

First, I like to assess the student level and needs, and offer a pathway forward that is mutually agreeable.  Next, I tailor my tutoring to the needs of the student. I also ask for feedback to make sure my help is serving the student's needs.

I have two master's degrees: one in teaching English as a Second Language, and one in Journalism.  I hold licenses to teach K-12 reading, K-12 English as a Second Language, and 5-12 English Language Arts.

I also have a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, and am comfortable tutoring in middle school math up to basic algebra.

I will offer the first hour free.  Then I charge $25-$35 per hour, or a minimum of $20 for a half-hour. I also provide students with an exhaustive list of free online resources they can use independently.

When I was in high school, I used to help friends with their math homework.  My first teaching job was in West Africa during Peace Corps.  I earned licenses to teach English, reading and ESL after 2006 and have been teaching in public school since then, with a one-year stint assisting in ESL classes in a community college.

I've worked with students ranging from those learning to read and write in English, to high school and community college students, and even graduate students studying journalism.

I've taught essay-writing skills to students who are just learning how to read and write in English.

Find a tutor or teacher who is positive, encouraging and motivating: part cheerleader, part teacher.

Interview the tutor by phone or in person first. Ask the tutor a question about something you want to learn about. If you can understand the answer easily, the tutor probably can help you.
