Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first step is to understand the PURPOSE of your writing. Is it a school assignment, a resume, or maybe a professional article? Once we know the context, we can think about what to write and the proper elements to include.
Next, we BRAINSTORM to come up with ideas that fit the purpose and, most importantly, the AUDIENCE who will read your writing. Think about how differently you'd write to your mother as opposed to a bank president.
Sometimes it helps to FREE WRITE to jump-start the process. No need to worry about organization, spelling, or general construction at this point. You're just thinking on paper.
RESEARCH comes next -- or if the word "research" scares you, think of it as DISCOVERY! You want to show a balanced knowledge about your topic. What are your own assumptions and what do others think?
ORGANIZE topics and show your CRITICAL THINKING process. All the steps above are PRE-WRITING. Now you're ready to dazzle your audience with your topic knowledge and writing skill.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I taught English composition at St. Cloud State University for two and a half years and I was a trained tutor in the writing center.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I typically charge $25 per hour (one hour minimum, then half-hour increments) plus $10 round-trip travel. I prefer to meet you in person at least the first time.
For follow-up review (such as Google Docs online or MS Word docs emailed to me) and Skype, no travel is charged.
I am usually available for late afternoon, evening, and weekend appointments.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with writers from middle-school ages through adults in settings with wide cultural and international diversity.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
PURPOSE -- why are you writing a particular piece? (No, not just because the teacher assigned it.) What is the objective? Are you informing your readers or encouraging them to do something?
AUDIENCE -- who will read your piece? What might they already know about the topic? What might they already think -- positive or negative?
What do you think about the topic? Do you know anything about it or are you learning something new?
