What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We assess students to determine their math proficiency and then develop a customized learning plan to address gaps and/or enrichment opportunities.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Mastery of the Mathnasium Teaching Method and the Mathnasium Teaching Constructs that Make Math Make Sense. We leverage a combination of techniques including mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written to help students conceptualize and master math concepts.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Our programs are based on a monthly fee and include 12 sessions each month. We recommend students attend 3 times a week to realize significant improvement in their math skills.
How did you get started teaching?
Initially as a teaching assistant in graduate school. Later as a Junior Achievement volunteer in schools.
What types of students have you worked with?
All grade level from KG to adult. All skill levels from gifted (2+ grade levels ahead) to remedial (3+ grade level behind). All passion levels from inspired to apathetic.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a tutor in your area of expertise?
Find someone who goes beyond just knowing the material. Find someone who is passionate about teaching and connecting with students. Find someone who builds your confidence and has the patience to work through your difficulties.
What questions should students think through before talking to tutors about their needs?
Don't settle for just getting a better grade. Go for understanding the material and how and why it matters!
