About
I hold a BA in English, an MA in English Literature & Creative Writing, as well as a TEFL Level 5 Certification. Combining these qualifications, along with 15 years of ELA teaching experience, I have the breadth and depth of knowledge and experience to help a student at any level succeed and reach their desired outcomes.
Each student is unique, and the service provided should be catered to the needs of the student. I believe that words have power and to be able to communicate in written and verbal forms is essential to success in all areas. However, I also understand this does not come easy. I personally didn't learn to read independently until I was 10 years old. If it hadn't been for a kind, patient teacher I would not have discovered my passion for writing and literature. My goal as an instructor is to be able to help students in the same way my teacher did.
One part of teaching that I enjoy the most is the "ah ha" moment. When a student has struggled with an idea or concept and then it clicks. The other aspect I love about teaching is more subtle; I enjoy when the work has paid off in the little things, when I look back on the road traveled and I see the new habits and new skills that have finally become natural instead of a consent struggle. I believe that many students don't even realize it is happening and it is my job to remind them of these little victories as an encouragement forward.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Each student is unique and should be treated as such in their learning experience. Because of this I always begin by discussing the student’s goals and desired outcomes. This discussion shapes the course of the tutoring sessions.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BA in Communications and English, as well as a MA in English Literature & Creative Writing. In addition, I am TEFL Level 5 certified.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard pricing is between $20-60 per hour. The rate depends on how much outside prep is required to meet the student's desired outcomes.
How did you get started teaching?
I have worked with all age learners since I began teaching swimming lessons at the local YMCA. Upon graduation from college I worked full time in a traditional office environment. Soon I discovered that what I enjoyed most about my job was teaching and training my staff. Because of this I sought out an opportunity to teach group tutorials to home educated students. Not long after I returned to university to earn my MA so that I could teach university level courses.
What types of students have you worked with?
My primary experience teaching ELA, Literature, & Writing is with middle & high school, as well as university, level students. However, I have also worked with elementary age students and adults in other learning environments.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I feel a strong combination of knowledge, experience, and passion for learning and seeing students grow is vital in any teacher. While many instructors have these aspects, in the end it is about the student and teacher clicking and being about to connect so that there is a clear and open path of communication between them.
