About
I have a Spanish degree from Michigan State University and ESL (English as a Second Language) certification from Oakland University. I've tutored both languages for 15+ years, but my focus in recent years has been on Spanish. My love of the language and the Spanish-speaking cultures has grown over the years and, honestly, I cannot imagine doing anything else! I love to witness the satisfaction a student feels when they reach a new level in their learning, and the general confidence that language acquisition gives them. Though I've taught people of all ages, my approach merges best with the goals of high school and adult learners. This is because I believe in structured, grammar-based instruction in addition to the conversational approach. To that end, I use a textbook as well as YouTube videos, reading assignments and tailored homework assignments to reinforce the lessons. At present, I offer classes via Google Meet, Zoom or Whatsapp. If my philosophy of teaching seems like a good fit for you, give me a call or email me. I look forward to hearing from you!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My first class with a new learner consists of getting to know the student and learning what his/her goals are for language learning. Since most of my students are beginners, I follow with a demonstration of how to form a basic sentence in Spanish just to get their feet wet. After that, I use the book "Easy Spanish Step-by-Step" to teach the basic themes of Spanish. In addition, I use other readings, videos and activities to reinforce what has been learned and to provide some variety.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelor's in Spanish from Michigan State University and a certificate to teach ESL (English as a Second Language) from Oakland University.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $30.00 per hour for an individual and $45.00 per hour for two students together, which is a good way for two friends who are interested in taking a class together to save a little money. And since I usually teach online, the students don't even have to travel to have class together.
How did you get started teaching?
In my mid-twenties and straight out of university, I didn't feel ready to teach a classroom of children, so I took a "temporary" job in an office. But the interest in teaching never dimmed, and I did tutor a few classes here and there as a second job. After many unsatisfying years at my office job, I decided to tutor language full time and I've never looked back!
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with adults and children alike, although most of my students are 16 and older. I've worked with people from Europe, Asia and Latin America wanting to learn English as well as Americans wanting to learn Spanish. One fun thing for me has been having several of my English students decide to add Spanish to their studies. I believe their experience with me gave them the self confidence to take on a third language!
