Student Centered Tutoring
About
Student Centered Tutoring is all about your student! I specialize in Algebra and Geometry, and together we will meet your math goals! I am passionate about helping students understand math using teaching strategies that are tailored to their learning style.
I graduated from Calvin University's education program with a bachelor's in mathematics in 2017. I have experience working with all ages (elementary through high school) and have been tutoring on and off for the past eight years!
One thing you will notice about my teaching is that I never just give an answer. I answer questions with my own questions to guide students to the answers on their own! This way they will remember concepts and could even teach someone else (the ultimate way to show mastery over a concept/skill!).
I love getting that "aha!" moment when students gain confidence in math! In my training as a teacher, my favorite parts were working one on one with students, and figuring out ways to teach a concept that reached how individual students learned! Tutoring allows me to focus on individual students and their needs.
It can be frustrating when you don't understand what is happening in class, and I believe that everyone can understand math! Let's ace that math class together!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
For our first tutoring session we will:
-set goals together for what you to accomplish and understand. Those will be our main objectives to achieve together.
-establish favorite ways to learn (visual. audio, hands-on learner etc)
Each session, we will:
-go over homework or study for tests together, especially any concepts you are struggling to master.
-work on lessons/practice problems to reach the goals we set together
-have you teach the skill/concept in our goals back to me in order to achieve mastery!
As I talked about above, my teaching style is asking lots of questions to lead you in your learning! I answer questions with my own questions to guide students to the answers on their own! This way they will remember concepts and could even teach someone else.
I also encourage LOTS of questions! I honestly believe their are NO dumb questions. I'm there for your questions, so ask away!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am trained as a secondary math teacher.
I graduated from Calvin University's education program with a bachelors in mathematics in 2017.
I have tutored off and on for the past 8 years. My favorite subjects to tutor are Algebra and Geometry, but I can teach any math from 6th-12th grade.
I am trained to put together lessons that meet common core standards using various teaching techniques to meet individual learning styles.
In the past 8 years, I have also worked with kids from all ages working at a summer camp with elementary through high school and working at a church as their family ministries coordinator (elementary classes through middle and high school ministries).
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard rates are
$40/hr for in-person tutoring sessions (this includes being able to text me throughout the week with homework questions)
$30/hr for online tutoring sessions.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching because I have a passion for helping struggling students understand math. I never wanted a student to have fewer opportunities just because they were having a hard time in math class.
Math builds on each other, so if you miss important concepts in one class (like understanding how to solve equations), then the classes afterward will only become more difficult (like solving systems of equations or equations with multiple variables!). Let's build a strong foundation first and tackle your goals of understanding math!
What types of students have you worked with?
For math tutoring, I have mostly worked with middle school and high school students in algebra.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Do not just look for someone with experience, but look for someone who you are comfortable asking questions. That tutor is there for just you and your questions! If you do not feel comfortable or even do not feel heard or stupid with a tutor, find someone who believes in you and gets excited when you ask questions!
Also find someone who will not just give you an answer. Find a guide. A guide will teach your brain how to go through processes of problem solving and understanding a concept. That's the kind of tutor you want!
