Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
In the first session, I will talk with student about what their goals are - what they would most like to improve. After asking about their study habits, and what they already know, I will start going throught a topic, seeing which methods of discussion and learning work. I seriously try to avoid lecturing and preffer discussion as a method for learning; it has worked better in my experience and seems to be what the science indicates.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've aced all classes and tests associated with subjects I teach (see qualifications). I have learned most of my teaching methods through experience and scientific research on psychology, memory, the brain, and study methods.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge 25 dollars an hour and 15 for the half hour. I usually recommend hour-long sessions for academic tutoring, especially for the first session. If you are interested in beatboxing, or nutrition/fitness advice (which I have researched heavily), a half hour is probably sufficient.
How did you get started teaching?
I started tutoring friends in high school on my own and through clubs. I have kept it up ever sicne.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with middle school, high school, and college students.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
The world beatbox camp was amazing. I have always been interesting in beatboxing, but after the camp, I feel I can teach it very effectively (I've taught many friends).
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure your teacher is flexible in teaching methods. You don't want a tutor who just lectures you to death. Have someone you can relate too (and a qualified person).
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
You should think about what you are looking for in a tutor. What has helped you learn in the past?
