About

Learning should be interesting and fun. I can help your student learn or improve their skills for academic success and to become lifelong learners. I understand that each student learns differently and many have trouble with attention and focusing. I can work with that too. If your child struggles with reading and phonics, let me help.

Frequently asked questions

During the first meeting we would develop a relationship of trust and interest for working together. I would access the student's needs and goals. I would get input from the student and the student's parents. If necessary, I would contact the student's teacher to get their input as well.

I have been working in reading intervention at a local school for the last two years. I have done much research and stay current on proven reading methods. I homeschooled my own children for 23 years and have taught at homeschool co-ops. I have attended teaching conferences as well.

I charge $35 per hour depending on the student and their needs. $25 per half hour.

I started teaching when my youngest son was ready to begin preschool activities. Before that, I had been teaching at my church for several years.

I work in reading intervention at a local elementary school and tutor part time. I work with students who have ADHD, dyslexia, processing disorders, trauma disorders and some who just want to maintain skills over the summer or want to get ahead.
I often am the first to notice when a student may have a learning disorder. Recently, I counseled a parent on getting the school to provide IEP testing and extra services for her child. This was her first child so she did not recognize any disorder and the school had not previously identified it.
If your child needs additional help, the tutor must use a phonics approach including the science of reading method and use of decodable books. Research shows its effectiveness.
Is the student prepared to do homework outside of tutoring time? If not, progress will be much slower and the number of sessions per week with the tutor should be increased. Is the parent willing to put in time to sit with their child while they read and do their homework? If not, the child may not recognize errors in their reading nor get help when they come to words they don’t know.
